Traffic controls & blocked sources

Block (or allow only) specific sub IDs, source IDs, referrers and ISPs per offer and partner, test a value, and show partners what is blocked.

A traffic control is an allow or block list on one click field. Use it to stop a bad placement, a fraudulent sub-publisher or a network operator without pausing the whole partner.

Manage all controls under Offers → Traffic controls (https://app.trackcrown.com/app/offers/traffic-controls), or the controls of one offer on its Custom payout rules tab (section Traffic controls). Managers and above can edit them.

Create a control#

  1. Click Add control (sheet Add traffic control).
  2. Fill in:
FieldOptions / notes
NameOptional, e.g. "Fraudulent placements".
ModeBlock matching (deny list) or Allow only matching (allow list).
FieldSub 1…Sub 5, Source ID, Referrer (the Referer header of the click), ISP / carrier.
Operatoris (exact), contains, begins with, does not contain.
ValuesOne per line, case-insensitive, 1–5,000 values.
Test a valueType a value to see whether a click with it would be blocked.
Blocked clicks go toThe fallback chain (offer → workspace fallback URL) or A blank page (no redirect).
OffersEmpty = every offer.
PartnersEmpty = every partner.
Active from / Active untilOptional time window.
StatusActive or Paused.
  1. Save. The edge picks the change up within seconds.

How matching works#

  • Block matching: a click whose field value matches any value is refused.
  • Allow only matching: a click is refused unless its value matches — including clicks where the field is empty. Make sure partners always send the field before you use an allow list.
  • "is", "contains" and "begins with" never match an empty value; "does not contain" does.
  • When several controls apply to the same offer and partner, the first one (oldest) that refuses the click decides.

Examples#

Block two placements sent in sub2:

ModeFieldOperatorValues
Block matchingSub 2issite-123
spam-network

Accept only traffic from referrers on your partner's site:

Allow only matchingReferrercontainspartner-blog.com

Block a mobile carrier:

What happens to a blocked click#

LinkResult
Affiliate link /r, smart link /sStatus fallback, reason traffic_control. Fallback chain (or a fail route for "Blocked by a traffic control"), or the neutral page when the action is A blank page.
Transparent link url=Redirects to url= as always; the click is only flagged traffic_control for reports.
Server-side click /clkRefused with error_code 9 "blocked by a traffic control"; logged as a fallback click with reason traffic_control.

Blocked clicks earn nothing: they never reach the offer, so they cannot convert through it.

Partners: Blocked sources#

Partners see the controls that apply to them in the partner portal under Blocked sources: "Traffic the network does not accept. Matching clicks are sent to the fallback page and earn nothing." When nothing applies, the page says "Nothing is blocked".

Automatic controls from optimisation rules#

Optimisation rules (Automation → Optimisation rules) evaluate sources hourly and can write traffic controls automatically, for example to block a sub ID with many clicks and no conversions. Review the controls they create on the same page.

Traffic controls vs. targeting#

NeedUse
Restrict by country, device, OS, region, ISP, IP, language, scheduleTargeting
Block specific placements / sub IDs / sources / referrers across offers and partnersTraffic controls
Block one partner from one offerOffer → Affiliates → Block

Traffic controls test sub1–sub5, source_id, referrer and ISP only. To filter on sub6–sub10 or a custom parameter, use targeting Parameter filters.
